Healthcare
The Healthcare sector is a leading employer in the North East and since 2001 our NHS Innovations North team have been working on exploiting intellectual property generated by the region's NHS Trusts.
Over 140,000 people work in NHS Trusts, healthcare, biotechnology, and life science organisations and together, they generate an annual turnover of more than £4 billion.
Leading medical research is underway within the research departments of the region's hospitals and within the universities and bodies such as the Centre for Life, the Institute for Ageing & Health and the Life Knowledge Park.
The North East is also home to some of the biggest names in medical and pharmaceurical sectors such as Avecia, GlaxoSmithKilne, Merck and Sanofi. These companies and their supply chaimns are represneted by regional developmemnt agency supported bodies such as the North East Process Industries Cluster (NEPIC) and the Centre for Excellence in Life Sciences (CELS).
