Chemicals: Generating in excess of £10bn of sales, the sector accounts for 30% of the North East's industrial base and employs around 40,000 people. World leading companies based in the North East include Avecia, Lundbeck, SSL International, Sanofi, Huntsman, Invista, Dupont, BOC, Biofuels Corporation, HyClone, Specials Laboratory, Angel Biotechnology and Thomas Swan.
Food & Drink: With an annual turnover accounting for around £3.5bn, the food & drink industry in the North East is made up of over 1500 companies employing more than 40,000 people. The area has become a base for companies including United Biscuits, PepsiCo, Nestle, and Kerry Foods.
Healthcare: Contributing an annual turnover of more than £4 billion, the Healthcare sector is one of the region's leading employers and home to Avecia, GlaxoSmithKilne, Merck and Sanofi.
Energy: The Energy Sector in the region boasts one of the leading hubs researching new and renewable sources of energy and is the base for a number of companies in offshore industrie and the environmental and nuclear decomissioning sector.
Defence and marine: Over 4000 jobs are directly associated with the Defence sector in the North East and the industry remains an important contributor to the regional economy.
Automotive: The automotive sector accounts for £1 billion of the North East's Gross Value Added and more than 26,000 jobs. Home to Nissan's Motors UK (NMUK) since 1984, the Sunderland plant produces 25% of all the cars manufactured in the UK.
Knowledge Intensive Business Services: Representing the transport, financial services and leisure industries, the sector employs 225,000 people and well known regionally based employers include Northern Rock, British Airways, Orange, EDS, Barclaycard, N Power, GNER, CJ Garland and Dickinson Dees.
