NorthWest based tech start-up DriverNet, an app that fast tracks deliveries, was recently named as the UK regional winner of the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2017.
The competition, organised by the European Space Agency, recognises the best innovative use of satellite technology from 28 European countries, with DriverNet collecting its UK winner award at European Space Week in Tallin, Estonia. The app fast tracks vehicles into sites which saves time, around 30p of driver and fuel costs, and avoids queueing which uses up to 0.3kg of CO2 emissions per minute.
The award includes a £5000 cash prize and a wide range of business incubation services and technical support from the Satellite Application Catapult, the UK government agency for developing the latest Satellite technologies.
DriverNet’s award success follows innovation grant funding from the Department for Transport and Innovate UK, the government agency for innovation in technology. This funding has helped Lancashire-based DriverNet to develop its app which delivers a range of benefits to delivery drivers and fleet operators, including precision navigation for lorry and van drivers, which also then fast track their vehicles into delivery sites in just ten seconds, automating a process that can take minutes, cost pounds and generate needless engine emissions.
The company also took part in an Innovate2Succeed programme with innovation and business support organisation RTC North. The programme helps companies take ideas from theory to production. Innovate2Succeed is delivered by RTC North and funded by Innovate UK and the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020,
Georgia Riley from RTC North said: “DriverNet is a fantastic example of a company successfully using innovation to transform its business. Innovate2Succeed has helped businesses like DriverNet take those important steps to create ingenious new products and services. We’re delighted at DriverNet’s award-winning achievements this year, and look forward to a successful launch of the app in 2018.”
Founder Anthony Chisnall said: “We’ve had a fantastic year, topped with the award, which recognises the expertise that will help us launch DriverNet into the market in early 2018.
“Our industry knows we need to adapt more quickly to innovation, and by digitalising a process that hasn’t changed since the invention of the HGV, our app can potentially save logistics partners hundreds of thousands of pounds per year, whilst reducing their carbon footprint.’
2017 was an exciting year for DriverNet, which has recently been selected to participate in Telefonica’s Intelligent Mobility accelerator, a six-month programme for leading start-ups in this sector. The programme will partner DriverNet and nine other start-ups with Network rail, the Transport Systems Catapult and Thoughtworks Ventures, as well as connect them with Telefonica’s global B2B customer base.
Innovate2Succeed helps growing companies with plenty of ambition to manage the development of products and services, helping to get them to the right market in a timely fashion. It's a fully funded programme providing up to seven days of bespoke coaching support to meet the specific problems and barriers facing individual businesses.
