Neil Wilson Design is an award-winning creative design agency based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Specialising in interior design, branding and digital media.
Jhangir Kahn and Neil Wilson, of Neil Wilson Design, had big plans to take a derelict building in the west end of Newcastle and transform it into a new business venture. They approached Design Network North, a project run by RTC North for help and advice. Through the Design for Growth fund, they were able to acquire the funds they needed to get their ambitions off the ground.
Mr Wilson & Mr Kahn had previously worked together on interiors for the Best Western Ryokan hotel, also on Westgate Road, and for the hotel’s restaurant Luigi Kahns. Combining Jhangir Kahn’s 12 years experience in property development and retail with Neil Wilson’s award-winning ability to create a vibrant, memorable brand, with interiors to match, the pair were more than capable of driving this idea forward.
The result is Sleeperdorm, a 60-bed hostel that offers clean, minimalist design, with all the mod cons and conveniences of an ordinary hotel. Sleeperdorm challenges ideas of a traditional hostel, with a smart interior and panoramic views over the city. It also has a fully soundproofed media room, where guests are free to watch television or play video games until the early hours, without disturbing other visitors. All of the materials used have been chosen for longevity, style and comfort, with luxury mattresses that guarantee a great night’s sleep. Together, Wilson and Kahn have both set out to prove just what good design can do for a business.
Neil Wilson knows that what they have created at Sleeperdorm is something very special. "We have worked very hard on the branding for the hotel and feel confident that this could be something we could replicate in other cities across the UK"
Jhangir Kahn agrees, "We think that the end result looks fantastic, and we have had some great feedback from our guests too."
